Day 20 through 23: Hot Mess

Below are links to my original Day 20 through 23. It was Wednesday January 23 through Saturday January 26, 2019. The reality of my job changing had set in and I was in acceptance. I received my 2nd shipment of Nutrisystem and I had lost 18 pounds ! And there is why I call today's blog "Hot Mess". I have basically lost nothing during these 23 days.

There is no one to blame but me. What have I been up to for the past 3 days and today ? Well, Friday I headed off to attend a ball game and spend the night with Rich & Barb at camp. We had some time before the game so we went out for Mexican food. I had a ground beef burrito and a chicken enchilada. The burrito was basically ground beef in a flour tortilla with a red sauce and a bit of cheddar cheese over it. The beef was rather flavorless. The enchilada had some stringy chicken with a bit of seasoning, also in a flour tortilla with a red sauce and some cheddar cheese on top. Perhaps my idea of a burrito and enchilada is severely Americanized ? I expected more "stuff" inside both items. We also had the usual chips & salsa and some ice tea to drink. At the ball game, I had a hotdog, a 24 ounce Michelob Ultra and a soft serve ice cream in a waffle cone. Not too bad ! Saturday Rich made breakfast so I had 2 slices of french toast with syrup, 3 pieces of thick cut bacon and orange juice. It was a rainy day so we headed out for a day trip around Canandaigua Lake. First stop was a candy store called Sweet Expressions. It was expensive, with chocolate ranging from $25 to $27 a pound ! I bought 6 pieces of candy and it cost me nearly $28, so it was over a pound. Yep, pieces were huge. I got 2 salted caramel sticks, 2 smores bars and 2 other nut & caramel patties. All items were huge and heavy .... and delicious. As of today I've eaten all but 1 piece. Calories are likely in the thousands. After the candy store we went to a Microbrewery and Barb & I shared a beer flight. The calories in 2 juice glasses of beer were negligible, in my book. Next stop was Heron Hill winery. I tasted 4 wines and ended up buying 2 bottles ($16 each) to bring home. I also had a tiny bag of oyster crackers. Dinner when we got back to camp was steak, 2 ears of corn, mashed potatoes with butter and a slice of apply cinnamon coffee cake. I headed home shortly after dinner so I could get out of the woods before it got too dark. I had a great time and didn't have to think about being unemployed for a while. I slept surprisingly well on the pull out couch in the camper but it was nice to get back home to my own bed. Yesterday I spent the day worrying about Minnie. She was meowing a lot and kept going back and forth to the litter box. It seemed like she couldn't pee or poop. I suspect having to eat so much dry food while I was gone has caused a problem. She might also have bladder stones or something else going on. I called the emergency vet but they were not taking any patients (wtf good are they ?) and I didn't really have anywhere else to take her. I checked the litter box frequently and there were indications she was peeing, so I was glad to see that. She could have an infection - I know how awful bladder infections feel ! I decided to just keep a close eye on her and I also put the dry food up. However, I had to put that back as she was meowing and I suspect she wanted it. She also wanted treats, so I let her have those in addition to plenty of canned food, which I added a couple of teaspoons of water to. I also cleaned out her water fountain to make sure she keeps drinking. I basically spent the day watching her, watching YouTube and playing Cookie Jam.

That brings me to today. Monday September 9. I checked the litter box this morning and although she is peeing, there are still signs of small amounts of urine on multiple occasions. This is not normal for her. I also don't see any poop, so that worries me. She is eating and drinking so I'm going to give her some time and see if she can poop. I put out a paper plate with some olive oil on it and she did lap up some of it. That might help her poop. I left the plate in hopes she will have some more. I read online that you can give them Miralax but I'm not sure I want to do that at this point. For right now she is eating and drinking and she seems comfortable. She's spent a lot of time snoozing in my lap, which is nice.

Saturday and Sunday were both chilly so windows are closed tight and last night I took the air conditioner out of my bedroom window. I don't see that being needed until next summer. The one in my office is going next ! The temp in the house is mid 60's and that is comfortable enough, so I am definitely going to lower the thermostat this coming winter. I survived at 66 all day yesterday and it was only 64 in the house this morning. I have sweats and I have blankets ! I also have space heaters and an electric blanket, so I will not freeze !

So it's Monday now and I should be job hunting. I'm just not motivated to do that. It's really disheartening that no one will even give me a chance. I did follow up with the CEO I reached out to a week ago Saturday. He advised he forwarded my resume to his Ops team and advised me to check in every 2 weeks. Not exactly encouraging, but also not a "thanks but no thanks". I'd really like to get a job with that company and be able to move forward with my life.

The AT&T strike is continuing and there are no indications of an agreement happening anytime soon. Hard to know how many people are honoring the strike since Florida is a right to work state. Not sure about the other states in the south with striking workers. Every worker that crosses risks being shunned by their peers when the strike is over, but likely had to make the choice of feeding their family or going hungry. I'm going to guess most people don't prepare ahead and bank enough money to survive a long strike. Why would they ? The last strike was in the 80's, which is probably before most of them were born. Younger people today live in the moment and spend every penny they have. They don't think about saving for the future. Reality sets in quick when you don't get a paycheck. For their sake, I hope the strike ends soon but I hope they take the company to the cleaners !
